1. Start with your plans
Decide where you want to live, when you want to move and how long you intend to stay. Tell the agent whether you need a main home or a temporary stay so they can confirm suitable options.
2. Compare the full monthly cost
Ask what the advertised rent includes. Request a written breakdown of utilities, internet, parking and any other charges, alongside the upfront payments required.
3. View the home and ask questions
Check furnishings, appliances, heating, cooling and the condition of the property. Discuss pets, parking and any other needs before committing. Confirm availability and who is authorised to let the home.
4. Review the agreement
Read the proposed contract and clarify the length of the tenancy, payment dates, deposit arrangements, maintenance responsibilities and ending or renewing the agreement. Get independent advice if anything is unclear.
5. Prepare for moving day
Agree an inventory, photograph the condition of the home and record meter readings at handover. Keep the agreement, payment receipts and contact details together.
